Academic Job Market Resources + Support

We know that going on the academic job market can be a stressful experience for graduate students and postdocs. Starting in Spring 2021, the Writing Hub and Engaged Teaching Hub will pilot a new workshop series and a weekly writing group, intentionally designed to support graduate students and postdocs who are preparing written materials for the academic job market.

The Workshops

During the workshop series, we will overview and demystify common genres required for academic portfolios in most disciplines. While these workshops will not be able to explore the nuanced expectations of your particular discipline, they will explore common features and general best practices for writing strong materials.

The Writing Group

At the weekly writing group, graduate students and postdocs will have a dedicated time and virtual space to work on their job market materials in community with their peers. The writing group meetings will provide time and space for writing the materials, gentle accountability for making steady progress, and opportunities to receive peer feedback on drafts-in-progress.

At the start of each writing session, the Grad Writing Consultant facilitator will ask participants to set a goal for the writing time and also set up a separate breakout room for participants who wish to give and receive peer feedback on their drafts.

If you cannot attend a workshop, don't worry! We will record the workshop sessions and upload links to the video recordings soon after the workshop.

If you cannot attend a writing group session, please consider joining us for the Virtual Writing Room! The Writing Room runs 9:00am-11:00am, every weekday morning, during Weeks 1-10.
